Interview with Andy Peloquin

For the record, please state your name.

Andy Peloquin. My real name is Andrew, but I’ve been Andy since I was young. To me, Andrew sounds too stuffy and formal.

What inspired you to become a writer?

I had an elementary school teacher who was a fanatic about the arts and sciences. He made all of us practice some sort of art. Seeing as I can’t paint, draw, sketch, or color well, writing was all I had left. I was thrilled to discover I had a natural inclination for it.

What are your hobbies?

I’m a comic book reader, a gym nut, a TVphile, a puzzle-aholic, and a guy who loves to nap.

What are you passionate about?

Writing. I LOVE telling great stories, and I’ve found it a true thrill to push the limits of my writing/creativity to come up with the most unique and surprising stories I can.

What social media do you use to contact with your fans?

I prefer to use Facebook. I’m not a huge Twitter user, but I do have a following there. Facebook is more personal, and I have more room to say what I want to say without the 140-character limit.

What is your username on the different social media platforms? (do you want this information to be published)

I’m Andy Peloquin on all my social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Goodreads, BookBub, and my website.

What did you do before you became a published author?

I worked first as an English teacher, then a copywriter.

Do you have another job other than writing?

I do a bit of copywriting and blogging during the morning to help pay the bills.

How long have you been writing for?

I’ve been writing for about 3 years, but my first book was published less than two years ago.

What’s your writing style like?

I tend to write fast-paced, action-packed stories that engage the senses and draw you in. You’ll feel everything my characters feel!

What’s your favorite genre to write/read in and why?

I love fantasy—both as a reader and writer. I love the freedom to do whatever I want with my world, and the versatility the genre offers. Plus, what’s not to love about magic and warriors and dragons and heroes?

Some writers have something playing in the background, do you and what?

I tend to write best when I’m listening to music. My writing playlist has a bit of everything: pop music, EDM, techno, hard rock, instrumental, epic music, and more.

What’s the inspiration behind your books?

I LOVE the psychology of my characters and really getting into their minds. I like to base my stories around a question or psychological principle and let the adventure give a bit of insight into the psyche of the characters.

If you could do it all over again, would you change anything about your books?

I don’t think so. I love the stories I’ve told, and I’m looking forward to telling many, many more!

Is there anything you found particularly challenging about writing?

I, like most authors, really struggle with the “time invested vs. money earned” concept. No other industry takes as much of your time with so little reward, at least initially. It’s a slow-burn business that often takes years to get off the ground.

What authors are your inspiration?

When I think of the best characters, Scott Lynch immediately comes to mind. There’s something marvellous about the people he has brought to life in his works.

For world-building and an epic feel, no one beats Brandon Sanderson in my opinion. There’s something incredibly professional about his work.

What is your take on fanfiction?

I’m not a huge fan, but I know  a lot of people who love it. If it encourages people to write, I’m all for it!

What advice would you give any newbie author or anyone that wants to pick up writing?

Be prepared for A LONG wait. You’re not going to reach fame and fortune overnight. It’ll take years of working at it every day to see results. But it’s worth it to tell amazing stories.

If you Don’t mind tell us a little about your personal life?

I’m married and have four teenaged children. I have a pretty quiet life, all things considered. I’m happier reading or writing than going partying or clubbing.

Some fun questions now

What age were you when you were first kissed?

Who was your high School sweetheart?

Didn’t have one.

What did you want to be when you were little?

Everything from a fireman to a spaceman.

What is your favourite colour??

What is your favourite food/s?

Probably hot wings. The hotter the better.

What are you afraid of?

Not reaching my full potential. Like the work I’m doing somehow won’t be as good as it could be, so I fail because I didn’t do it right.

How old were you when you first got drunk?

15 or 16, I think.

What was your first car?

Chevy Malibu

Did you live in a house or apartment when you were a child?

What was your favourite tv show as a child?

Probably Bill Nye the Science Guy.

What was your favorite book?

Sherlock Holmes. I still have it sitting on my bookshelf to this day.

Who did you have a crush on when you were in school and how old were you?

A girl a few years older than me. I was about 13 at the time.

Tell us a little about yourself. Perhaps something not many people know about?

I have Asperger’s Syndrome, one of the Autism Spectrum Disorders. You wouldn’t know it by looking at me, but it definitely affects a great deal of my life—both personal, professional, and creative.

Can you share with us the best way to contact you and where to find your work? This is where you have the floor.

Andy Peloquin: Lover of All Things Dark and Mysterious

I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist–words are my palette. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of fantasy heroes, villains, and everything in between. I’m also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy novels.

Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle–it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!

10 Things You Need to Know About Me:

  1. Hot wings, ALWAYS!
  2. I never forget a face, but rarely remember a name.
  3. I’m a head taller than the average person (I’m 6′ 6″)
  4. Marvel > DC
  5. I was born in Japan, and lived there until the age of 14.
  6. Selena Gomez, Skrillex, Simon & Garfunkel, Celine Dion, and Five Finger Death Punch are all in my writing playlist.
  7. Aliens are real, but it’s self-centered of us to believe that they would come to visit Earth.
  8. Watching sports: suck. Playing sports: EPIC!
  9. I earned a purple belt in Karate/Hapkido/Taekwondo.
  10. I dislike most Christmas music, aside from Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

A Few of My Favorite Things

“Creative, gritty, and beautifully dark…fantasy addicts will love it!” — Peter Story, author of Things Grak Hates —

“The fantasy world has a compelling new antihero…the Hunter will terrify and captivate you.” – Eve A Floriste, author of Fresh Cut

“From the first words on the page this fantasy holds the reader spellbound even after the book is finished…his character is very well-defined even if his past is a mystery. Root for an assassin? Oh, yes, one must!” — Carol Conley, for InDTale Magazine

“Oh the carnage! Fantastic bloodthirsty carnage! The fight scenes in this book were fast-paced, detailed and thrilling. I love a good sword fight and there is plenty of that here.” — Ami L. Hart

“One could get lost in this novel for its twisting plots, seemingly endless imagination, dark yet irresistible characters, or the mind-numbing paradox of its simultaneously dark and romantic world. One could follow the long and winding road of the dusky, fierce protagonist and fight tooth and nail not to sympathize with him. One could dance in the dizzying, intricate circles of Peloquin’s neo-mythology, or even basque in the black sunlight of a well-crafted gothic novel that both entertains and enlightens.” — Jesse G. Christiansen
