Maya Smock

Do you have family?

No.  I was an orphan and then lived in foster families.  I ran away in high school.

Tell us about where you live.

I used to live in a crappy apartment, but then made it big as an author.  My husband convinced me to buy a Spanish mansion in Las Vegas.

What species are you?

I eventually find out that I am a hybrid, part human and part alien.

Who is your best friend?

My best friend is Eric O’Reilly.  I am also in love with him.

What is your mission?

I am not really sure at first, but then I learn that the books that I write contain DNA code.  I figure out that I am being channeled by extra-terrestrials.

Who do you like the most?

I like Eric and I also like Jay McCallister.  He is an old writer who has taken me under his wing.

Who do you dislike the most?

My husband Claude is using me.  I figure it out and want a divorce.

What foods do you like?

I love all food.

What foods do you dislike?

None.

What is your favorite holiday?

I like them all, especially Christmas.

Do you have any pets?

No, but I always wanted dogs.

What is your most prized possession?

The crystal necklace that was left with me at the orphanage.  It has extra-terrestrial power.

Who do you work for?

I work for myself as an author.

How old are you?

I begin the novel at twenty-one and then turn twenty-two.

What hobbies do you have?

I love to write and I love to read, especially science fiction.

What is your favorite place to be?

I love Las Vegas and San Francisco.

What is your favorite color?

Green.

Tell us a little about where you grow up?

I ran away in high school.  Eric O’Reilly caught me stealing books from his store and gave me a job.  I lived in a flop house and then got my own apartment.

Tell us a little about your childhood memories.

I was physically and sexually abused by different sets of foster parents.  My childhood was a nightmare.

Is there anything you would like to share with us?

I make friends with a group of celebrities who believe in aliens.

Excerpt from one of the Short Stories
THE GREAT BROCCOLI WI-FI THEFT
 by Nancy Kress
Nancy Kress is the author of thirty-three books, including twenty-six novels, four collections of short stories, and three books on writing.  Her work has won six Nebulas, two Hugos, a Sturgeon, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award.  Most recent works are the Nebula-winning novella “Yesterday’s Kin” (Tachyon, 2014) and THE BEST OF NANCY KRESS (Subterranean, 2015).  Forthcoming in 2017 is TOMORROW’S KIN (Tor), the first novel of a trilogy based on “Yesterday’s Kin” and extending its universe for several generations.  Kress’s work has been translated into Swedish, Danish, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Croatian, Chinese, Lithuanian, Romanian, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew, Russian, and Klingon, none of which she can read.  In addition to writing, Kress often teaches at various venues around the country and abroad; in 2008 she was the Picador visiting lecturer at the University of Leipzig.  Kress lives in Seattle with her husband, writer Jack Skillingstead, and Cosette, the world’s most spoiled toy poodle.
Do you know what a pas de chat is?  I didn’t either, two months ago.  But I know now, and it’s going to make me a hero.  Really!  Everybody will applaud for me so hard their hands will sting—especially Mom!  They’ll give me a medal!  It’s going to be great!
I’m going to solve a mystery that nobody else can solve.
Just as soon as I figure out how.
#
My name is Nia.  I’m ten.  I live sometimes on the moon, at Alpha Base, and sometimes on Earth, in Illinois.  I like both places, but Illinois has a big problem: GRAVITY.  There’s too much of it here.  I wish they could just ship some of this gravity to the moon and even things out a little bit, but it doesn’t work that way.  On the moon there isn’t enough gravity to keep human muscles strong unless you exercise a lot, and I got lazy.  So now I’m back on Earth because my mom’s job moved us here—again!—and my muscles aren’t strong enough.  Which is why I was in ballet class doing a pas de chat.  It was not my idea.
“No, no,” said Mademoiselle Janine, who was in charge of the class.  “Nia, you must land lightly.  Lightly!  Ellen, show her the pas de chat.”
Ellen smirked at me and raised her arms.  Pas de chat means “step of the cat,” which is a really stupid name because it doesn’t look anything like a cat.  I know—we have a cat.  In the pas de chat you bend one leg, jump off the other leg, bend that one in the air, then land lightly.  If you can find a cat that can do that, I’ll give you a million dollars.
Ellen did the step.  She landed lightly.
“Now you try, Nia,” Mademoiselle said.
I landed like a baby elephant.
“Well…” said Mademoiselle.  “These things take practice.”
Did I mention that ballet class was definitely not my idea?
#
“I want to quit ballet,” I said at dinner.  “I’m no good at ballet.”
Dad said, “You’re probably better than you think.”  Dad is always on my side.
Mom said, “You might not be good at it, but you can’t go on quitting things when they get hard.”  Mom is always on the side of doing hard things.
“But I stink at ballet,” I said.  I pushed my mashed potatoes around with my fork.  “I’m not good at anything.”
“That’s not true,” Dad said.  “You’re good at a lot of things.”
I said, “Name three!”
“Well…you’re good at spelling.”
“Nobody needs to spell good.  Autocorrect fixes it.”
Mom said, “Nobody needs to spell well.  ‘Well,’ not ‘good.’”
“See?” I said.  “I’m not good at sentences, either! I’m not good at anything!”
“Yes, you are,” Dad said.  “You’re good at training our pets.”
That was true.  We have a dog named Bandit, a robot-dog named Luna, and a cat named Pickles.  I trained Bandit to fetch.  I programmed Luna, which is the closest you can get to training a robot.  I couldn’t train Pickles to do anything, but…cats.  They do what they want.
I said, “That’s only two things.”
Mom smiled.  “You’re good at getting into trouble.”
Dad said warningly, “Angela…”
“I’m teasing!  Nia, I just wanted to make you laugh!”
I wasn’t laughing.  Mom never understands!
But then she said, “Look, Nia, everybody has to practice and work hard in order to get good at something.  Do you know how many times my broccoli has failed?”
Mom is a plant geneticist.  That means she changes plants’ genes to make them better.  Right now she’s changing broccoli, which in my opinion can’t ever be made better no matter what you do to it.  I hate broccoli.  She was just making me feel worse.
She knew it, too, because she put her hand on mine and said, “Nia, honey, after dinner let me show you something.”
I said, “As long as it’s not broccoli.”

Excerpt:

Brandon

“Gem,” I call but not too loud and knock her window glass again.

Coming here was a hard ascent.  Though it’s not too high, climbing pipes was never my forte and this was the first time I tried it. Currently I am on her window aisle, shivering in the cold , waiting for her to open the damn window. I can squeeze in easily once she opens it.

“Gem,” I call again. I finally here scrambling footsteps approaching the window sil.

“Brandon?” she calls out, sliding the window open.

“Hey,” I wave and she stumbles back letting out a chuckle. “It’s really you. I thought I was dreaming!”

“Nice to hear I visit your dream as well,” I wink and her cheeks turn red. I am always rewarded with her blush when I catch her unguarded like this.

She crosses her arms across her chest and puffs. I can’t help but notice her chest rising higher, together with her boobs. The grey satin night gown she is donning is a treat to my eyes. It reaches just up to her mid-thighs with the netted-coat draping on either sides, but it still gives a good view of her long naked legs that I had missed out in her party gown.

“What do I actually do in these dreams of yours?” I ask, propping my elbows on the window sill.

“I am sure you will be more than happy to do the same if I let you in,” She tells boldly, leaning forward.

So I suppose I was right in guessing she has dirty dreams about me. I am one lucky guy.

“That’s exactly what I had in mind. I will take you up on your offer. Demonstration is more gratifying, right?”

She looks at me mortified, but steps away to let me enter. I hop into her room and inhale the scent which smells solely and exclusively of Gem.

“Sorry, but unfortunately I don’t keep condoms in my room. I hope you have come prepared,” she tells with her back to me.

She has got to be fucking kidding me. When Gem resorts to flirting there is no stopping her.

“I don’t mind fathering your kids. In fact it would be my pleasure, especially if they go after you in looks and brains. I would be a proud dad.”

Do I mean it? I do, I think. That family picture looks perfect.

She gasps and turns to me with wide eyes. I am not sure if she is shocked or amazed. Her mouth tics up and I get my answer. She is definitely happy.

“I would want them to have your hair. I love the color.”

Gem always has a problem with her hair color. She has dark brown hair which complements her skin tone, but she wanted a lighter color. But I am against her dying it.

I rub my chin in speculation. “If you say so…but I do like your hair.”

“And hazel eyes,” she continues stepping forward. “Your eyes are so beautiful.”

“No,” I argue. “Your eyes are enchanting. Definitely emerald green.”

“Hazel,” she steps closer.

“No. Green,” I refute, covering the gap.

When she is just an inch away she mutters, “Let’s just have twins. One with green eyes and blonde hair and the other with hazel eyes and brown hair. Perfect combination of both?”

“Awesome idea.” I clasp both her hands. “For that to happen, don’t you suppose we should get down to some action?”

She looks deep into my eyes, her face basking in the glow of the two bedside lamps.

“You are not serious,” she says softly.

“You want me to be?” I ask, pushing her back towards her bed.

Uncertainty flickers in her eyes before she slowly shakes her head. “No.”

If she had said yes, I would have definitely taken her up on her offer this time and would not even hold back. Her answer is a sad no and I should just suck it.

“What are you doing here, again?”  All I see in her eyes is twirling confusion. She wants me, but she doesn’t want to want me. Maybe she is annoyed at herself for wanting this. Either way, it’s funny.

“Well, the night is not over yet. And I want to make the best of the hours left.”

“How do you plan on doing that?” Now she wants me to want what she wants but can’t admit to.

“By sleeping with you,” I whisper huskily in her ears.

Her throat bobs and her lips part. “Show me how.”

Smart girl. She is leaving the choice to me.

I hop onto her bed and settle comfortably on her bedspread. I stretch my arm on her pillow and raise my brows at her. “My hand will be your pillow for the night. Once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t miss it.”

Her face glows with pure happiness this time and she follows suit, and lands on her back with her head on my arms and her body curved towards mine.

“This is a good idea.” She bites her plump lips. “What brought this on?”

“I should have done this the last time I had got such a chance. But I fucked up, and now I want to correct my fault.”

“You are doing it just for me?” Her doubt lingers in her tone.

“It’s never just for you, Gem. It’s as much for me as its for you. I need this. I need the proximity. I need you.”

“Me too.” Her hands rest on my chest while my other arm curves around her waist. “If dad finds out he will kick us out of the house.”

“I will leave by then,” I assure. “Will use the same route.”

She chuckles but doesn’t object.

“There is one slight problem, though.”

“What?” she jerks her head up and looks down on me.

“You will wake up to my boner. You can’t complain about it.”

She snorts and falls back on my arm. “I would be disappointed if you didn’t have one. I would think that I am losing my effect on you.”

That’s my Girl. Always frank. My Girl. I love the sound of that. Will make her mine…One fine day.
