INTERVIEW: Carolyn Arnold Author of the McKinley Mysteries

Meet today’s guest, Carolyn Arnold.

She is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series and has written nearly thirty books. Both her female detective and FBI profiler series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining, leading her to adopt the trademark, POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.

Today, she answers a few questions for us and gives us insight into her life as a mystery author.

When you first begin writing a new book, is your main focus on the characters or the plot?

I’d have to say it’s really a blend of both. I approach writing a book without an outline and with merely an idea of the storyline. Oftentimes, I don’t even know the identity of the killer until my characters work through the investigation. Both the characters and the plot are strengthened through the editing process.

Why do you write within your chosen genre?

I love the logical progression and intrigue that goes with the mystery genre. The fact that I love to read mysteries and watch crime dramas has also made writing in the genre only a matter of time.

How much research goes into your fiction writing? What is your approach?

As an author of police and FBI procedurals, a lot of research goes into each of my books. I need to know how real life police or FBI would handle situations, have an understanding of forensics and weapons, as well as a grasp of the human aspect—the interaction between departments of law enforcement and within a department.

I’m grateful to have contacts from law enforcement who are generous in sharing their wisdom and experience with me.

Is there a time of day or night when you’re most creative?

It used to always be the morning, but that’s not always the case anymore.

Describe your writing environment. (Do you prefer noise or silence? Is your work area messy or neat? What do you see when you look around you?)

Oh, I love working in my office for the most part, but sometimes during the summer, I’ll take my laptop outside and write on my patio.

I prefer just above tomb silent and my work area is somewhat messy with papers everywhere… (bows head in embarrassment).

INTERVIEW: Coveted Kiss by Karen Tjebben

For the record, please state your name.

Karen Tjebben

What inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve always thought it would be cool to write a book. In college, (while studying elementary education) in my literacy courses, I’d peruse the picture books and nonfiction children’s books and dream about writing my own book. At the time, it seemed impossible, but as the internet expanded and companies like Amazon grew, the dream started to take shape and become a reality. When my twin daughters went to kindergarten, I set aside time each day to dedicate to writing. Surprisingly, the story that unfolded in my head was not for elementary students, but it was better suited for young adults who enjoy supernatural thrillers. When I finished the first series, The Scintillate Series, I transitioned to adult romantic suspense and began The Savage Security Series.

What are your hobbies?

Writing is by far my most time-consuming hobby. The pull of the unfinished story is undeniable. I crave time behind the computer screen so I can create or edit the alternate realities that form in my head.

What interests are you into?

I enjoy taking trips with my daughters and husband. We live in North Carolina, so the beach and the mountains are easily available. We also journey into Virginia to visit Busch Gardens and Water Country in Williamsburg. We always get the summer passes and try to take as many trips as possible.

What is your username on the different social media platforms? (do you want this information to be published) Yes

Facebook is the social media platform that I use the most. I try to post at least 4 – 5 times a week.

What did you do before you became a published author?

Before writing, I taught elementary school for ten years in California and North Carolina. Teaching is an amazing career. Watching students mature and reach for their dreams is very rewarding.

When I became a mother, I left teaching to stay home with my twin daughters. Nurturing them through their lives is awesome. They are incredible young ladies with gentle hearts and exciting ambitions.

What advice would you give any newbie author or anyone that wants to pick up writing?

Perseverance and dedication are key ingredients to success. You must read daily and write even when you’re not inspired. Find a trusted friend to read your books and give you their honest opinion. Be open to their suggestions, but most importantly, fall in love with your characters. If you don’t love them, your readers won’t either.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your books?

My Savage Security books are a mixture of romance and suspense infused with a healthy dose of creep factor.

Blood Kiss is about a woman who is threatened by a stalker. Alisha is pro-active. She isn’t waiting around to see what her stalker will do. She decides that she will protect herself. While gun shopping, she meets Mike, a man with the skills and the heart to help her. I love Alisha and Mike. They are both smart, assertive, and have big hearts.

Avenging Kiss is about revenge. Summing up this book is more difficult. There isn’t one main character or hero. Instead, Avenging Kiss explores the reality that one’s actions don’t just affect that one person, but rather the truth that actions have unintended consequences that can negatively affect others. The problem/solution is resolved in Avenging Kiss, but some threads are left dangling.

Coveted Kiss deals with the fallout from Avenging Kiss. It can be read independently of Avenging Kiss, but it would be most enjoyed after reading Avenging Kiss. Jack is in full alpha-male mode as he protects Bella in the aftermath of Hazeem’s murder attempt. Logan discovers the history behind Aditya’s actions and learns how to forgive. Hazeem realizes that he’s not as brave as he thought he was. And the men of Savage Security must hunt down the terrorists living within their community.
Who are your cover designers?

Christine MacClellan from Rushing Water Studios designed the covers for my supernatural series – Scintillate Series – and my romantic thriller series – Savage Security Series. http://rushingwaterstudios.com

 What authors are your inspiration?

I can’t just say one. I love Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Dean Koontz. I love thrillers with a hint of the supernatural. For the romantic in me, I love Elle Casey, Elise Sax, and Trish McCallen. Their books fall into the romantic comedy or romantic suspense category.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

I am working on the rough draft for the fourth book in the Savage Security Series. Stolen Kiss is about a serial killer who unintentionally crosses the paths of the men from Savage Security.

Do you have any pets?

We have two hamsters that are adored and treasured by my daughters.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Jane Austin’s wit and wisdom are evident in this quote from Pride and Prejudice. In a time when a woman’s social standing and standard of living depended on a husband, every single man was considered eligible, but the wealthy man was the ultimate prize.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Thank you! Thank you for choosing to read one of my books. Everyone’s time is precious and fleeting, and I want my readers to know that I appreciate them sharing their time with me.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview with us!!!

JG Sumner is a Registered Nurse who went rogue.  As good as she was at starting IV’s, she enjoys writing the down the stories in her head even more.  Most of the time the characters won’t stop pestering her until she has them down on paper.

JG can often be found with a glass of red wine or prosecco in front of her computer.  When she’s not creating, she enjoys the outdoors hiking, bike riding, snowboarding, and camping.

JG has a very dry sense of humor, and should never be taken too seriously.  She loves to hear from her fans, and even those who aren’t and would love to hear your opinion on her books.

JG writes romantic suspense/thrillers including: A Shot in the Dark, Into the Light, The Surrender Trilogy including Surrender, Shattered, and Saved which will be available through Limitless Publishing soon.
