Breaking Down My Walls Excerpt
Bunching the note in his fist, he continued to talk out loud. “She is going to pay for making a fool of me. I am going to literally tie her to me for the rest of this mission and see how she likes having choices taken away from her. Gunner is going to have my balls in a sling when he finds out I lost her.”
He folded the letter and stuffed it into his pocket as he ran to grab his satellite phone. So much for radio silence.
Levi: Where the hell are you?
Taya: I told you I’m fine. See you Sunday.
Levi: This is not a game. WHERE ARE YOU?
Taya: Calm down. I’m an adult. I can look after myself.
Levi: We are here because of YOU. Now where are you?
Taya: Sorry. I never asked YOU to come. See you Sunday.
Levi: Remember this: I will make you PAY and IGNORE you when you are BEGGING me.
Taya didn’t answer. She was nervous. Levi had never spoken to her like that. Maybe she had pushed him too far this time. But in all fairness, this was something she couldn’t control. She had promised Ryder she would be at the wedding.
Maybe she approached it wrong and should have told Levi, even asked him to accompany her to Italy. Oh well, too late to question herself now. What’s done was done. She would have to deal with the consequences when she returned.
As Levi put his jeans back on, he was so mad he could spit nails. He had to let Gunner know and pray that it didn’t give their location away.
But first, Levi called his brother. “Hey, Zac, I need your help.”
If Levi was calling, Zac knew there was a problem with the mission. “What’s up, bro?”
“The piglet escaped the yard without its mama, and the old man is going to want to know.”
“Escaped or had help?”
“Escaped and left a trail.”
Zac knew how serious it was, but he couldn’t help laughing. “Geez, bro, that must have stung. Getting a little rusty? This little piggy went to the market. This little piggy escaped—”
“Don’t need your shit, Zac. I’ll have to deal with Poppa Bear and the backlash, so just pass the message on.”
Still chuckling at his brother’s misfortune, he said, “No problem. Glad it’s you and not me. I’ll get back to you in five.”
Zac hung up, and Levi was left waiting for instructions from his dad. He had to think. Where could she have gone? It wasn’t like she had any friends in Croatia, so it had to be her friends from Toronto. She said they were taking care of her transportation. That didn’t make sense. How were they managing that, and how had they reached her?
Then he remembered her on the computer. Maybe she had checked her email. It would be risky, but they had somehow reached her. He quickly moved to the computer and searched the history. Damn, she had cleared it. She must have figured he would look.
Maybe Taya had brought her personal cell phone with her? Levi went into her room and went through her knapsack. Pulling out her clothes, he couldn’t help noticing her unique scent. Holding the shirt she had worn yesterday, his body instantly reacted when he picked up her scent. The hair on his arms raised up. His basic animal instinct recognized the scent of its mate. He had a biological need for this woman.
The ringing of his phone brought him out of his sexual trance.
“How in the name of Christ did you lose her in less than six hours!” Gunner bellowed so loud Levi had to pull the phone back or risk getting his eardrums blown out.
